Oh also

October 31, 2008 3:18 PM

In addition to the activities listed on my earlier post, I'm also looking forward to doing more photography and knitting.

Jesus, this election has me so tightly gripped, I've forgotten my own hobbies.

Making me do all the work

October 31, 2008 3:06 PM

Today I spotted someone at work wearing a Halloween costume: O.R. scrubs. Perfect!

I sidled up to him and said, "I like your nurse's uniform, guy." And he looked pleased and said, "oh! Thanks." There was a weird pause, and he added, "but they're actually surgical scrubs."

WHAT.

So I tried to jog his memory: "Oh, surgical scrubs! Or, you might call them ..."

He looked a little baffled, and guessed, "surgeon's outfit?"

"O.R. SCRUBS..." I said, widening my eyes and bobbing my head and circling my hand, indicating for him to continue.

"Yeeeees," he said, looking over his shoulder to see if I was gesturing to some kind of clue.

"OH ARE THEY?" I demanded. And then finally, after nearly killing me, at last he laughed.

Once my time is no longer wholly devoted to keeping the gays liberated:

- Working out
- Drumming
- Reading comics
- Editing fun videos, like this:

Here's the email I wrote to FiveThirtyEight.

Hello FiveThirtyEight folks,

Thanks for running such a great site -- I've really come to depend on your great writing and analysis for this campaign. But I wanted to alert you about a misleading ad that's running on your site.

The ad is in favor of California's Proposition Eight. Although it contains no specific claims (just messages like, "how does Prop 8 affect me? You might be surprised"), it links to ProtectMarriage.com, a site that contains numerous false claims about the ballot proposition. Among them:

- Schools are required to "teach" gay marriage (this is untrue; the Sacramento Supreme Court ruled in case 34-2008-00017366 that there was no such requirement)
- Parents will be unable to object (this is also untrue; the claim is based on a case in Massachusetts, where the law is considerably different)
- Churches may be sued for objecting to gay marriages (there is no basis for this made-up claim)

I know you guys do a lot of great work, and I've come to rely on fivethirtyeight.com for rigorous, accurate news about the election. But I worry that linking to fabrications will reflect poorly on your trustworthiness. I hope you'll do your readers the favor of removing ads that link to untrue information.

And thanks again for your excellent explanations of this year's election. I couldn't get through it without you.

Take care,

Matt

What now

October 8, 2008 9:47 PM

This Stop8 work that I've been doing is pretty draining, but I'm glad to have it. James is probably going to be overseas until November -- maybe even longer -- and it's been good to have something distracting me.

There are times when I take a step back from the project out of necessity -- when I'm rendering out video, for example, and can't do anything else -- and I discover that the moment this mission leaves the very front of my attention, the house feels completely empty. I'm simply at a loss; what now?

It'll be good when he's back. I hope it's not long after the election.
